A throne is a large, heavy chair, often elaborately decorated with jewels, precious metals, and expensive clothes. Thrones were usually used by kings, queens, pharaohs, and other dignitaries. By the Middle Ages, family heads often sat in similar huge chairs, though less expensively adorned.
Thrones are symbolic of power, divinity, royalty, monarchy, and kingship. In the Bible, for example, "the throne of David" refers to a king and his descendants, who ruled ancient Israel for centuries. The oldest known throne dates to around the year 1800 B.C.E.

Thrones are often referenced in this way in popular culture. For example, 'the throne of England' - the happenings of that nation's royal family - is popular in the news and print media. The Iron Throne from the popular series Game of Thrones is both a physical object and represents the fantasy story's monarchy. Facetiously, the toilet may be referred to as a throne.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Throne
1. Begin by drawing the elaborate leg and arm of the throne. Extend a long, curved line and double it back upon itself to form an open circular shape on the end. Extend a curved line down from the circle, forming the arm. Extend another curved line down from the base of the arm, and a nearly parallel line beside it. Draw a curved line at the bottom of each, forming an open circular shape. Enclose the chair leg by using three lines to form an inverted trapezoid shape.
2. Repeat the previous steps to form a mirror image of the throne's first arm and leg on the opposite side.
3. Connect the arms using a curved line and the legs using a scalloped line. Then, draw the rear legs of the throne, visible beneath its seat. Use curved lines to draw the rounded "t" shape of each.
4. Draw the cushioned seat of the throne. Use curved lines to enclose a rounded trapezoid shape.
5. Draw the padded arm of the throne. Use a long, curved line to draw a spiral shape around the existing arm. Give the cushion a three-dimensional appearance by drawing a curved line parallel to the original arm.
6. Repeat this process on the opposite arm, forming a mirror image of the first.
7. Draw the back of the throne using a long, curved line or a series of curved lines. Note the semi-circular bulge at the top of the throne.
8. Draw a small circle at each corner of the back of the throne. Then, use a long, curved line to outline the throne's back, beginning at the back of one arm, traveling over the top of the throne, and connecting to the opposite arm.
9. Give the cushions texture and a three-dimensional appearance. Draw several perpendicular lines in the shape of a "t" on the back of the throne, indicating folds in the material where it is tacked down. Draw curved lines across the seat cushion to define its front and top.
Color your cartoon throne. In our example, we've made the base of gold and the cushions a deep red - an expensive color for material during the Middle Ages. Purple is also used as a sign of royalty.
